These mitts and hat are inspired by the ruins of Byland Abbey in North Yorkshire, famous for its 13th Century tilework pavements featuring intricate geometric motifs. They are knitted in the round using stranded colourwork technique, with small bobbles for texture, whilst the mitts are finished with a picot edge.

Needles and Notions
Preferred needles, in size required to obtain gauge over stranded colourwork, for medium circumference knitting (eg a circular needle, 40cm/16in length) for hat and small circumference knitting (eg DPNs or long circular for magic loop) for mitts: Hat gauge was achieved using 3mm (US 2.5). Mitts gauge was achieved using 2.75mm (US 2).
Similar needle(s) one size smaller for working hat band and mitt cuffs.

Plate (approx 27cm) and bowl for blocking hat.

Gauge
Gauge to 10cm/4in is after wet-blocking, over stranded colourwork pattern worked in the round:
Hat 25 sts and 34 rnds at widest part of crown (gauge before blocking was 33 sts).
Mitts 30 sts and 38 rnds. Mitts may be worked at a looser gauge to increase size.
Measurements and Sizing
Hat: diameter of crown 27cm/10.5in; band size 53cm/21in; height 22cm/9in.
Mitts: length 17cm/7in, palm circumference 21cm/8.5in. The mitts are shown on a hand with palm circumference 19cm/7.5in.
