Knitters are understandably intimidated by the concept of cutting your knitting. This fear keeps you from exploring the rich world of Shetland, Norwegian, and other knitting that embraces steeks as the most efficient way to knit stranded colorwork for garments.
Using your own choice of a stranded and steeked vest pattern, we will cover all topics necessary to successfully completing your garment including:
- stranded tips & tricks
- maintaining tension
- inserting a steek at a neck or armhole
- steek reinforcement and cutting
- finishing of neckbands and armholes after steeking
Students will choose their own pattern. Use the Ravelry advanced search for stranded knitting and tick the box for steeking under Construction. Neckline style doesn’t matter; we will cover both v-neck and crew neck. Students can choose a full sweater, but we won’t be covering anything regarding sleeves. Our focus will be steeking at the necks and armholes.
Students are required to source their project materials at Around the Table Yarns but will receive a 10% discount for project materials.
Prerequisites: Some stranded colorwork experience. You are given 3 weeks in between sessions to allow time for completing fairly large amounts of knitting on your project before the next class. Your ability to complete homework in between classes will be crucial to gaining full benefit of the techniques.
