Have you seen all the beautiful colorwork samples in the shop and wondered if you could ever make something so gorgeous? YOU CAN! This class will start from the very beginning, teaching you how to work 2 colors at a time to create a limitless number of garments and accessories. It’s not all Fair Isle out there!
The first 2 sessions will teach you the basics of how to hold your yarn, read a colorwork chart, choose colors, and work in the round on a 16” circular needle. Our pattern is the Hidden Falls Headband (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hidden-falls-headband) which is a free pattern that will give you just enough practice and plenty of confidence in the technique. We will be using the 3-color version of the pattern.
The second 2 sessions will use the same color chart but you will work on a pair of fingerless mitts of Peg’s design that will help you learn how to do stranded work on a small diameter project. You will use either dpns or Magic Loop, whichever you prefer. After all 4 sessions, you should have the skills necessary to do a larger colorwork project like a stranded yoke sweater.
Your class fee covers four 1.5 hour sessions.
Materials fee includes printed copies of your patterns, a color wheel pin, and your choice of a full size skein of Woolstok for your main color plus 2 half-skeins of contrast colors from a selection curated by the shop. This is enough yarn to make all the projects for the class.
Please note knitting needles are not included. You will need 16-inch circular needle and your choice of either dpns or Magic Loop needle in sizes 4 and 5 as called for in the pattern. If you are a very tight knitter, you could size up to 5 and 6. The projects are meant to be knit firmly.
Prerequisites: Ability to independently cast on and begin work in the round on a 16” circular needle. Ability to work in a single color on either dpns or Magic Loop. It is possible to take only the April sessions by special arrangement with the shop. However, you must take the April sessions to participate in the May sessions. There will be homework for the first class.
This is an advanced beginner level class.
