First developed by Australian knitter Susie Myers, this method simultaneously shapes the back neck, shoulders, and sleeve cap for a better fitting top-down sweater. Asa Tricosa and Barbara Walker and others also have top-down methods but they require picking up stitches from initial shoulder shaping. The Susie Myers method is truly seamless and contiguous, allowing the knitter to incorporate stripes, lace, and other patterning as you work. Class participants will choose a pattern from this bundle: https://www.ravelry.com/bundles/contiguous-140 Please note that the bundle only includes sweaters using this very specific construction method. There are over 30 patterns in the bundle and they are grouped by designer. Choose 1 with the neckline you want. We can alter many of the other details including making a pullover into a cardigan or vice versa. Please do not choose a pattern that is not in the bundle. Peg has completed or worked on the following patterns in the bundle: Topolino, Mabel, and B(l)ack to Life by Isabell Kraemer, and REViVAL and Same not Same Same by AnkeStrick. So, if you want detailed hand-holding, choose one of these 5 with which Peg is most familiar. For her class demo garment, Peg is planning to knit Criss Cross by Isabell Kraemer using Why Knot Fibers from the shop.
The class will be 4 sessions scheduled with 3 weeks in between each session to allow for plenty of knitting time. The first session will be dedicated to learning the overall construction method, choosing a size, and preparing for success with this construction method. Subsequent classes will focus on pattern modifications for fit, personal style, and extra details.
Students are expected to source their materials from the shop and will receive a 10% discount on class supplies. Peg will send a detailed email a few weeks before the first session letting students know their homework for the first class. Spoiler alert: You’re going to need a large (minimum 6” square) blocked gauge swatch in your chosen yarn.
Prerequisites: Students should have experience knitting top-down sweaters, reading patterns, making increases and decreases, using stitch markers, and working with Barber cords for checking fit. You will need all the normal knitting supplies but especially a tape measure, a set of Barber cords, and a calculator. This is an Adventurous Intermediate level class.
