Tips and Tricks
Gauge and Size
● Because this cardigan is crocheted sideways, both stitch and row gauge are equally
important. Your stitch gauge will determine the length of your panels and the row gauge
will determine the width of your panels.
● The pattern gives several options for gauge. We suggest making a gauge in dc in order
to choose the correct hook size.
● Once you have the correct hook go ahead and follow the directions for making a sleeve.
This allows you to learn the stitch pattern on a smaller scale and determine how many
repeats of the pattern you will need for your size. Plus, you’ll have a sleeve completed!
Stitch Pattern
● Do not begin with a foundation sc. Begin with chains.
● All stitches are made in back loop only
● All T-ch or ch 1 at the beginning of a row are not considered stitches.
● 2stsc refers to making a single crochet with another stacked on top. 3stsc refers to
making a single crochet, stacking a second on top of it and stacking a third on top of
that. It does NOT mean that you put 2 stacks next to each other in the same stitch.
● All stsc at the beginning of the row are considered stitches.
● When making slst’s, pull up a bit to avoid tight slst’s.
● The 1st slst after a T-ch can be very hard to see. Place a removable marker in the top of
the 1st slst to help locate it.
● Row 1 of the Stitch Pattern is a short row meaning you will go back and forth working on
RS and WS without going all the way across.
● After finishing a leaf you will slst in the next 6 stitches. Pull up on the leaf motif to see
where the 6 slst’s begin.
● When making the 12 slst’s on the WS across the leaf motif the final slst will go:
Lacey leaf: between the 1st dc you come to and the treble
Full leaf: at the top of the 1st treble you come to
● The ends of your rows will look scalloped. Don’t worry!
