Managing long floats is an advanced but critical concept in colorwork knitting.  Ladder Back Jacquard (LBJ) is a clever way of hiding long and high contrast floats at the back of the work, keeping the public side looking crisp and professional.

Peg has curated a bundle of Ravelry hat patterns that would benefit from this technique.  Several are free downloads and some are for purchase.  You can also find your own pattern and use that – just make sure the stranded motifs require floats of more than 5-6 stitches.  For the shop sample, Peg used this pattern:  https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/its-not-about-the-hat   knit in Urth Harvest.  If you’re looking for a pattern with extensive notes on the technique, this is a great option but we will learn everything about the technique in class including how to modify a chart to incorporate LBJ.  So, choose a pattern with a motif you like if the fleur-de-lis doesn’t appeal to you.

Pattern bundle is here:  https://www.ravelry.com/bundles/lbj-hats

Students will source their yarn from the shop and will also need small amounts of two high contrast yarns in any gauge for use on our in-class practice swatch.  Practice swatch yarns can come from stash.

This is a 2-session class and each session is 2 hours long.  In Session 1 we will learn the basic technique on a small swatch knit in the round.  We will also look at different charts and learn how to incorporate LBJ markings and notation into the chart of your own pattern.  In Session 2 we will have a working session focused on executing LBJ in your choice of pattern.

Prerequisites:  Ability to independently cast on and begin work in the round on a 16” circular needle.  Ability to do basic stranded colorwork knitting including reading a colorwork chart.  This class will not spend time on stranding 2 colors as we will have plenty to learn with the invisible stranding techniq
